Way Back When & Beyond
Blue Elephant Theatre comes to Camberwell Library this month with a performance and workshop - both free!
Way Back When will be performed at 4.30 on Wednesday 11th November.
It’s been a very long time since Grandma came to the Motherland from Jamaica but some memories never fade. Today she is sharing them.
From cricket to carnival, she recalls her Caribbean childhood, the journey to England with all her belongings in her “grip” and the life she made there.
Way Back When is a show for families about family history and sharing memories. Join us for vibrant storytelling, traditional games and audience interaction in this journey through time.
Written by Jacqui Livingston and performed by Janelle Thompson, Way Back When is especially suitable for ages 4-11 but is loved by all ages.
Way Back When is approximately 30-40 minutes long.
We also have a Drama Workshop on Friday 20th November at 4.15pm.
The workshop explores Black History Month 2026's Theme of "Honouring our Communities - Standing Firm in Resilience and Hope".
Drawing inspiration from Way Back When, this workshop will explore themes of resilience, strength and hope. It will consider well-known Black leaders such as Samuel Beaver King and Claudia Jones as well as the resilience and strength found in people like Grandma in the play, forging a new life away from home.
Using drama games, improvisation and devising, this one hour workshop will also encourage children aged 7 - 11 to think about how they can carry that same spirit into the future, whether through personal ambitions or making a positive difference in their communities.
Please note: Children do no need to have seen Way Back When to enjoy the workshop.
